Abstract

The purpose of this study is to compare those characteristics of nursing instructor perceived by students and faculty members using the Clinical Instructor Characteristic Ranking Scale developed by Rauren.
One hundred thirty-four juniors, eighty seniors and thirty-nine nursing faculty members were sampled from junior nursing colleges in Seoul during the period from November 25 to December 15, 1985.
The results of the study are summarized as follows:
1. Juniors, seniors and instructors ranked nurse characteristics as the high-test demanded role of a nursing instructor. Independence test between students and instructors and the nurse characteristics is shown statistically significant.
2. A nurse characteristic "demonstrates how to function in a real nursing situation" was the high-test ranked characteristic by juniors, and the high-test ranked characteristic by seniors and instructors was "demon-¢¥ strates ability to use scientific principles relative to patient care."
The result from this study indicates that students and instructors think the characteristics of role model of nurses are primary function of an instructor. The results are very promising in that students and faculty share the same view on the role of nurses. Better relationship between students and faculty members will be more important to promote this notion than professional competence.
